What does the E42 error code mean?

Error code E42 usually indicates a door-sensing failure. It’s displayed when the dryer is unable to accurately detect if the door is open or closed. While this error usually means the control board needs to be replaced, the door switch could potentially be the problem, so it’s important to test it to be sure.

The door switch acts as a safety feature by making sure the dryer operates only when the door is closed. If the door switch is good, then the board would have to be replaced.

Safety precautions

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by preventing any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.
  • Don’t test live voltage with a multimeter if you’re unfamiliar with how to prevent short-circuiting.Read more: 9 Ways To Improve Your Dryer’s Performance

How to troubleshoot the E42 error

Fix your Frigidaire dryer like a pro with these troubleshooting tricks.

Step 1: Access the door switch

  1. Unplug the dryer from the power outlet.
  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the top panel in place.
  3. Once the screws are removed, gently pull back on the top panel and lift it off, then set it aside.
  4. Remove the console by taking out a screw from each corner. Lift the console up slightly, then pull it forward.
  5. Take a photo of the wires to remember where they’re connected, then disconnect them and set the console to the side.
  6. Remove the screws at the top of the front panel since they’re exposed. Once those are removed, the front panel will lean forward so you can lift it up, and then out.
  7. Find the door switch, which is located behind the open door.
  8. Take a photo or note the wire colors and connections to help you with reassembly later on.
  9. Use a flathead screwdriver, if necessary, to disconnect the wires from the old door switch. Carefully remove each wire from the terminals.

Step 2: Test the door switch

  1. Set your multimeter to measure continuity between the switch contacts.
  2. Connect the multimeter leads to the switch terminals. Connect the positive (red) lead to one terminal and the negative (black) lead to the opposite terminal.
  3. Close the dryer door and check the meter reading. The meter should read continuity and/or have an audible tone when the door is closed. If the meter shows 0L or infinite, then the switch may be faulty.

If the switch is faulty, check the contacts for any signs of wear or damage. If the contacts are dirty or damaged, clean them with a soft brush or replace the switch as needed.

If the door switch and wiring are good, then you’ll need to replace the control board.
