The Large Surface Element is an OEM component for Whirlpool ranges. As a key heat source, it withstands significant thermal stresses each use for cooking tasks. This surface element measures approximately 10” in diameter.

Over time, microfractures may accumulate in the ceramic glass from repetitive heating/cooling cycles. Mineral deposits also build up on the surface, reducing heat transfer effectiveness.

Symptoms involve:

  • Inconsistent or diminished heat from the designated zone
  • Noticeable cracks, clouding or chips in the glass material
  • Safety hazards if integrity is lost, exposing electrical/gas

The element is compatible also for select KitchenAid and Maytag appliances.

For Whirlpool Large Surface Element (Part Number: OEM18092775)

Glynn for Model Number JER8885RAB

I received the large element replacement today which is a bit different from the failed large heating element. It required removal of the old epic sensor to be used on the new element which does not have a hole for epic sensor. Is it necessary for me to drill a hole in the new element? Also, the Limiter on the new element is different than the failed unit and the extra wires included do not match up with the connecting wires. Do they not make a drop in element identical to the failed unit on my stove that can simply be swapped out without removal of old parts from the failed unit?

1 Answer

Hello Glynn, the service replacement element from the manufacturer takes the place of several different elements that are no longer available, also the Instruction sheet is generic, your old element did not use the Epic sensor so disregard that part, the jumper wires are used if wires are not long enough to reach the new element's terminals.

Somesh for Model Number RF388LXGQ2

In my whirlpool range, the front left large burner stopped working. I ordered W10823692 from appliance pro and installed it. I realized that the new part has 5 slots while my old element only had 4. So now depending upon which of the slot I put the wire on, either the inner or outer coil heats up. In my old element, I don't see any concept of inner and outer elements which might be the difference. Should I purchase an extender which fit same in both slots so both inner and outer elements heats or is there a different part I should purchase?

1 Answer

Somesh, I think you may have ordered the dual element which this unit does not show to have a dual element. The part number that you should have gotten is W10823696.

Maybelis, You did not receive the wrong part. In most cases when the terminal is the wrong size you would simply put a different connector on it. They may have also moved the location of the terminals from what the old ones were.

Hello Kelly, the locations on the new element might have changed. If that is the case you will want to match the wires to the markings on the old element to the new one, hope this helps!

Louis, you may want to check to ensure that there are no grounded wires. If there is a grounded wire, it would need to be corrected. However, if there is not a grounded wire, then the most likely issue will be with the L2 side of the switch [WP9761048] not cycling the element properly.
