Robin, You will want to make sure that the thrust bearing is put onto the shaft of the transmission properly. If it is not then the unit will not spin. This could also be a possible problem if the thrust bearing has failed and is not lifting the brake.

My speed queen washer was making a humming sound but would work on different setting never noticed a hot smell. Now it just makes a humming noise all the time and will not start. There is still no burning smell. I took off the front panel and could turn the pulley belt by hand and could see the transmission turning. I tried starting it again and it still just hums, I'm not sure if it's the motor or what? The belt looks good and everything turns any info would help! thank you!

John, what you will want to to is dismount the drain assembly from the bottom of the motor and move it so that nothing touches the drain or hoses. From there you can initiate a spin cycle and if the unit goes into a spin, you have a clogged drain pump [201566P]. If the unit still will not spin, then you have a motor issue [201615P].

Hello Ken, This is more likely to be a spin bearing issue. The second time the unit is run, the bearing will be hot and expanding, causing the bearing to seize. For a more detailed diagnosis and part numbers, please post a new question including the model number from your units' I.D. tag so we can recommend parts that can be guaranteed to work properly on your unit. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Graham, With the unit not agitating or spinning then you will want to check the pump assembly to make sure that there is nothing caught in the pump and make sure that the pump turns freely. If this checks ok then the issue would be with the motor most likely.

Mary, Yes, based on your description of the problem, this would be a burnt up motor and you would need to replace the motor and the belt.

Had to replace pump because a bobby pin was shot right through it and made a hole. Before there was a leak there would be the occasional whirring sound. I always assumed it was one of my wife's bobby pins going along for a ride in the pump, but this was not the case. After installing a new pump the whirring sound remains and is in fact intensified, but now I can see the spindle spinning but the drive pulley going no where. The spindle below the pulley going into the pump is pretty rusty. Any ideas? Did the spindle snap perhaps? Is the pulley not seated correctly? It's seized up pretty good so I can't really tell. Any thoughts?

Hello Geoff, If you are referring to the transmission pulley, (large pulley in the center), as the drive pulley, the transmission W10840857 has an internal problem and will have to be replaced.

After replacing the inner tub seal and the lower bearing I am still having issues. I think it may be the motor. It runs fine on the regular agitate cycle but does not run correctly on the spin cycle. The motor spins but not like it should. It will run for a second and then make a "chugging" sound as it turns off and turns back on. It draws quite a bit of power when it does this to because it dims the lights in the house. I thoughts perhaps I did not reinstall the brakes or something correctly. so I mounted the motor and removed the water pump and removed the belt to isolate the motor. Even with no load it still has the same symptoms. Could it possible be anything other than the motor? before I spend the money on a new motor I want to make sure.

1 Answer

Chrism, Based on the description it does sound like the issue would be with the motor that is faulty.

Hello Emily, This is going to be a bad spin bearing WP40004201P. They fail when the outer tub seal R9900457 leaks a bit of detergent water into the bearing and washes out the grease.
