Hello Strat, do this check but proceed with caution , open the lid , hold down the lid switch and put washer into a spin cycle, observe the agitator as the basket starts to spin up, the agitator should be locked in position with the basket and rotate with it. If you see it agitating in the spin cycle then the transmission is faulty and needs replacing.

Gordon, The most likely cause for this issue would be the drain pump that is causing the noise that this unit is making. Check the pump for something caught in it.

Tom for Model Number SAV405DEWW

I have a Legacy washer Model SAV405DEWW. Everything works fine until the spin cycle. During the spin cycle the helix mounted to the pulley keeps riding up the slope of the plastic helix, mounted to the very bottom of the transmission, and popping over the edge. It sounds like a machine gun. The drum will turn but not very much. I would think something is supposed to keep enough pressure on one of the helix to prevent that. The idler pull and assembly are supposed to allow the belt to tighten slowly bringing the drum up to full speed speed. What is allowing the two helix to slip? This washer only has about 3 years of use.

1 Answer

Hello Tom. Look for wear and replace the helix if it has wear. Also, make sure the brakes are releasing. If so, the transmission is bad and will need to be replaced.

Shawn, You will want to check the helix on the pulley on the bottom of the unit and also check the belt to make sure that it is not damaged. This is the 2 most common causes for the issue.

Hello Chuck. Usually that is caused by bad bearings in the unit. You will need to check the tub bearings. Also, make sure the milk stool is good in the unit as well.

Liz, There should be a washer that would go under the e clip and if the washer is not in place then the unit will not have the lift to allow the brake to disengage during the spin cycle.

Hello Jennifer. It sounds like the brake is holding as it should on the unit. Try turning the pulley under the unit and see what it does instead of the drum.

Hello Julie. Check and see if the helix WP40047402 is bad under the pulley and is not allowing the pulley to rise and release the brakes. If so, you will need to replace the helix on the unit. If the brakes are releasing and the unit does not spin, you will need to replace the transmission W10840857 in the unit.
