The function of a filter holder, otherwise known as an air box, is to take in external air flow and channel it through a network of valves into the cylinder of the engine, which is where the fuel combusts and ignites the spark plugs.A filter holder might have to be replaced if it shows symptoms of disrepair or malfunction that prevent it from transferring air flow into the cylinder. These symptoms of damage could include an engine that won't start or misfires frequently, reduced fuel economy, or block smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Though these symptoms are not necessarily directly attributable to the filter holder, if a visual inspection shows that a damaged filter holder is indeed responsible, it should be replaced immediately.
