How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6010582 / WP691366 Dryer Idler Pulley

1) I spent a half-day researching online for possible causes for squeaks. Discovered the AppliancePartsPros YouTube videos, which were the best I found for clarity and ease of understanding. 2) I went from the videos to the website to locate each model-specific part that might have been causing the noise. Once I identified the parts for my model of dryer, I called customer service to confirm that I had the right ones before placing my order. I spoke with Sharon, who was very helpful and emailed me a listing of the parts, each with a link to it on the AppliancePartsPros website. 3) I ordered the parts online. All were in stock, and I received them in only a couple of days’ time. 4). Making use of the YouTube video for each of the parts (the site contains a link for each part to its installation video), my wife and son assisted with taking the dryer apart, removing the worn parts, replacing each with the new part, and then reassembling the dryer. We did some cleaning along the way, since the last time I repaired it was in 1997. With the videos for reference, we had no problems. Used a 1.5” blade putty knife to release the clips that hold the top of the dryer down, as shown in the disassembly portion of each of the videos. Aside from curing time for the rear felt seal, and cleaning, the repairs took about 1.5 hours. Replaced the idler assembly, rear felt seal on the dryer drum, the drive belt, and the set of two support wheels. The videos aided GREATLY in performing the repair! 

Installed the whole pulley idler 

17 year old Whirlpool dryer started squeaking when running. Replaced the rear drum support rollers, and while I was in there, replaced the belt and idler pulley. The original idler pulley was a friction part with no roller. With the new parts installed, this old dryer runs smooth and quiet. 

I replaced both parts. However, I should have just ordered the belt also from your company because the one I bought at Lowes was the wrong one. 

I used the web site to figure out the most likely causes for the drum not turning. I watched the web site's videos to see what I would have to do and thought it wasn't too bad; something a rookie could do. Ordered the parts (belt and idler arm) and followed the directions from the videos. Mostly a bunch of screws/bolts to remove with a couple in difficult places. (my dryer isn't full sized) There were some electrical connections to take apart. As i disassembled it, I took pictures of where everything was. Put in the belt and idler arm as the videos showed (really appreciate the part that showed how the belt went through the idler arm. Would not have guessed); buttoned it back up (referring to pictures often) and it worked. Still working a couple of weeks later. 

Replaced both support wheels and changed the idler pulley as well while I had it disassembled. Quick fix. 

My husband and I did the repair after some diagnostics with an ohm meter and found the timer had failed which was causing the dryer to run until the thermal fuse would fail.Doing further diagnostics the switch and the resistor had also failed.This dryer has served us very well for the last 20+ years and the thought of replacement was our first thought but we checked the parts prices from Appliance Parts Pros.com and figured we would give the repair a try.The dryer housing and tub still looks in great shape because it's been taken care of and replacing these parts has this dryer running like new again so our dryer repair and tune up of wheel replacement was the right move for us. 

Replaced the fuse by the heating element 

Found a parts list for your company that we had ordered parts from before ,my husband took the dryer apart to find the parts we would need .called to order parts and had them with in 24 hr .everything we needed was there really love how quick they arrived .my dryer was bought in 1988 was surprised you could still get parts . 

I used the upgrade roller belt tension part, new belt and also replaced the drum rollers. To keep tension off the roller shafts I looped a string around the groove on the front of the drum and tied the string off to the back panel. This made installing the front easier without having to try and support the drum while hitting the grooves with the clips. After the front was installed I untied and removed the string. Dryer runs smooth and quiet now with the upgrades.
