Alan S. for Model Number PCS484GG Thermador

I am looking for a Hot Surface Ignitor for the grill section of my Thermador Cooktop. The original part number was 15-10-312-2. That number has been changed to 00487542. This part has been discontinued. Is there another part that can be rigged to replace and operate the grill? I find it annoying and frustrating to have purchased such a high end product only to discover that certain parts that will indeed wear out are no longer available.

Hello Alan, 00415504 should be a satisfactory ignitor for the application although it is not recommended by the manufacturer. The only difference we could find is the length of the wires. If the wires are spliced to the existing wires, be sure to use ceramic wire nuts since they can withstand the high temperatures to which they will be exposed.

Non W. for Model Number Thermador GPS484GGS

I purchased an igniter that's rated for 3.3 to 3.6 amp as I believe the original part was for the grill. The schematic indicates that power runs through the burner switch and then through the valve safety switch. It appears that there is no power through the valve safety switch to the igniter, which would lead me to believe that there is a problem with that part. I don't know how that parts works and would like a little information. Why is the igniter for this model $180.00? Isn't the only requirement the voltage and amperage? Thanks, Aaron

1 Answer

Hello Non, The ignitor has to pull 3.2 to 3.6 amps in order to build a strong enough electromagnetic field in the safety valves' coils to open it. With too little current flow, the magnetic field generated is insufficient to open the valve. This can be caused by either an ignitor that is breaking down or a failing safety valve. You should check the voltage applied to the safety valve with the unit turned on. If 120Vac is present, the current flow should be measured. Either part, (safety valve or the ignitor), can be breaking down in resistance under a load, causing the issue. The most common failure is, of course, the ignitor, since it does endure high temperatures during 100% of the time the burner is on.

This is the ignitor for the griddle. It had failed to ignite (glow) any more. First ignitor shipped caused the burner to light, but would not stay lit long enough for the cooking surface to come up to temperature. Thinking the replacement part was defective, I had another part shipped out. I have now replaced this ignitor twice, but the second ignitor behaves just like the first one. To troubleshoot the problem, I pulled the thermostat probe out of the griddle and placed it in a glass of cold water. With the griddle removed, the ignitor works fine and the burner runs non-stop. However, I notice that if I back off on the temperature just a little, say from 500 to 450, the ignitor shuts off - even with the thermostat still in the cold water! I suppose most would say that the thermostat is bad also, but I did not have any problem with that before the ignitor died. Also, this is not the original thermostat, as I replaced that a few years ago. Any ideas???

Hello Victor. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the thermostat 00415004 is bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.
