Wynn, unfortunately, we would not be able to recommend an alternative to the manufacturer's discontinued motor 12002353 as the manufacturer has not listed a compatible replacement part number.

Ta for Model Number MAV7000AWQ

As-found situation: Washer not running when should have been. Water seemed slightly lower than expected, maybe was starting spin. Timer was at what I think is a rinse/agitation segment. I pushed the tub back and forth to reset any imbalance switch (none shown on Maytag schematic, extreme imbalance will stop the motor), then tried timer off-on, no action. I caught a faint smell of "burn" but couldn't tell from where. I rotated the timer to different segments to see if the motor would start, effectively cycled off and on for short periods still no action. I then left timer at "off" maybe an hour. After removing front panel: I left the cover on motor, motor spring was in place and seemed to be fine. Turned timer on, the tub spun then pumped out. During that time the "motor" seemed to have buzzing/grinding sound but the enclosure was open so unfamiliar sounds would be natural. I did not smell anything or see smoke. After pump-out, the motor was quite warm (I would say hot, but no idea of temp). I removed the motor cover. The motor spring doesn't seem to directly take up slack in the belt drive for agitation, spin and water pumping. I used a simple contact thermometer to measure temp - by the time I found that, the motor surface was about 100-105F, air temp was 80F I left the unit cool down using a small fan to help. Third try to start: Motor case was cooled to 80F. Put some water in the tub to have a bit of resistance, no clothing. Water level got up to Mini. I set the metal thermometer tip into the cover bolt blind hole Tried to run agitation before spin-out. Motor was bucking back and forth, the thermometer fell out.. A click/buzz was occurring. No obvious agitation as seems the motor would load and unload. Motor began to smoke/smell. Pushed timer off. Advanced timer dial to spin. Motor acted the same as trying agitate. Motor buzzed and Started to smoke. Turned off with timer. Turned off the outlet breaker. I am not sure the belt is tight enough, but the belt slipping MIGHT be causing the speed switch in the motor to be changing state rapidly could be the buzzing sound or even causing the slow and reg speed coils to be energized at same time. I noticed the motor spring doesn't always push the motor to the opposite side of the mounting plate. as the radial slide motion seems fine, maybe the spring is too weak. I inspected the drive belt - doesn't appear to be worn unevenly, no cracks on tapered sides. The fabric surface is shiny and intact EXCEPT the outer end of the wrap overlap is slightly lifted but not torn away. I did not measure its circumference. Any ideas?

Dean H, Double-check your wiring to the timer and check that it is the correct timer for your rev#

Casey, With the noise coming from the motor, this will likely be a faulty motor winding and will need to replace the motor of the unit.

Jack for Model Number MAV6451AWW

I have replaced the thrust bearing and belt on my washer. Tub spins but doesn't seem to spin as fast as it used to. Was not spinning before I changed the thrust bearing. The spin cycle runs and clothes get wrung out but are still wetter than they used to be. I realize this is only a 2-speed motor. (WP21001950) What is the component that controls the fast spin to wring out the clothes? I have read the winding circuit for the Start, Reg, and Slow. Which is the circuit that is running the tub spin portion? Is there a combination of circuits that make it spin fast? Which circuit(s) get 120VAC on the spin? Thanks

Hello Jack, You should first check the motor mount and if it doesn't pivot freely, you will need to lubricate the motor mount. You should also remove the belt and turn the drain pump WP35-6780 pulley by hand to ensure it is turning freely. If no problems are found the most likely cause of the issue will be the spin bearing 12001561. The electrical circuit will normally not be an issue on this design. As a note, if the spin bearing is changed it is a good idea to go ahead and install a new outer tub seal. The kit containing both the spin bearing and the outer tub seal is W10219156.

Patrick, You will want to check to make sure that the agitator is not damaged but sounds likely that the high speed side of the motor may be faulty and need to be replaced.

Woelfe for Model Number MAV5000AWW

Our washer will not spin/drain anymore. It would make a sound when turned on, but nothing would happen. We started trying to troubleshoot the problem and are concerned it may be the motor. While it is tilted back, we removed the belt from the three pulleys. The transmission pulley will turn counter clockwise, and then a short way clockwise. The pump assembly pulley can be turned in either direction freely. However, the motor pulley will not turn in either direction at all. Is this an indicator of a bad motor? Thank you in advance for your assistance!

1 Answer

Woelfe, Yes if the motor pulley will not turn at all then this will be a faulty motor and will need to be replaced.

Hello Phil, While it appears that pulley WP21001108 is the same, since it is not on the parts list from the manufacturer, we cannot guarantee it will fit and operate properly for the model number provided.

Mark, Unfortunately there is no way to replace just the screw and you would need to replace the motor for this.
