The shave plate is a common snowblower part that attaches to the back of the blower housing and directs snow into the auger and blade assembly so it can be cleared. The particular layer of ice and snow this blade is removing is the hardest and heaviest part of the snowfall. The shave plate is also called the scraper bar or scraper blade. Periodically, because it is in direct contact with the concrete surface below the snow, the shave plate wears out and must be replaced. A shave plate may be worn, gouged, or sliced so it does not smoothly remove the snow from the sidewalk. Replacing the shave plate is a simple task that can be accomplished in 30 minutes or less.
