For Whirlpool Refrigerator Compressor Motor Start/Run Capacitor (Part Number: OEM18027966)

Don for Model Number 10659092990

I had what they call a brown out and my fridge quit working. I replaced the relay and overload and it has been working fine for about 3 months and all of a sudden stopped again. Doesn't like we had a power outage or a brown out again. I ordered another start kit (AP3873993) for it and am going to try that once again. Do you think I should wire in a capacitor (WP4387764)? Would this help in my situation? We are planning on getting all new appliance in the future because of an upcoming kitchen remodel and trying to buy some time. Thanks,

Don, Thanks for the question!!! It is likely that the compressor is the issue and even with a capacitor added it will likely fail again in a short time period.

EOB, Unfortunately, we do not have the rating information on this run capacitor but it is unlikely that the run capacitor has failed if the compressor is not starting. Thie most likely cause would be a faulty start device.

Curt, I would replace the start relay, take the old one off and see if it rattles when you shake it, indicating that it is defective. Part number is W10920279

Hello Rick. If the compressor stopped with the 3 in 1, then it sounds like the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced. Usually the 3 in 1 will not fail that quick.

Will try and include all relevant info: The problem is the start relay keeps burning out, have gone thru 3 including the original one. The first one I put in lasted about 6 months. The last one I put in only lasted 1 month. The first start relay (the original) I pulled off the disk was in several small pieces. The second disk one was in about 3 or 4 pieces and then this last one was in two pieces. Both of the start relays I bought were the cheaper replacement part but looked identical to the original. This unit does have the Capacitor have not tested can't find a test procedure. The compressor windings have the following reading 5, 2.8, and 8 Note that the reading on my multimeter did fluxuate a bit. The windings to ground were open not shorted reading infinity so my understanding is the compressor is good. what is the probability of the compressor being bad. Question: Could the capacitor be causing the start relay to blow or is the start relay I am buying is substandard and poor quality. Could the overload relay be bad and blowing the Start relay. Would it be best to order the complete kit with all three parts and replace all at once.

Hello Douglas, If your unit has a capacitor, you should be able to follow the two wires from terminals 2 and 3 or 1 and 3. The capacitor jumps between these two terminals and connects to nothing else but the capacitor.

Ben for Model Number KSBP25FJSS00

The parts diagram for my Kitchen Aid refrigerator calls out this capacitor, but I just pulled the Start Device out (it's failed) and there is no capacitor wired to it. In fact the only available terminals on the start device assembly are the contact for the Red (to overload device) and White (to PTR device) power wires. No other terminal/lug connctions exist to connect a capacitor to. Inparticular, no terminal lug exists to the start pin on the compressor. It appears to only be connected through the PTR resistor. Is this normal for some Kitchenaid models?

Hello Ben. The part you use will depend on whether your compressor has been replaced before or not. If the compressor has never been replaced, you will need to order the start device 8201802 and it doesn't take a capacitor. If the compressor has been changed you will need to order the start relay and overload W11239930, and the capacitor WP4387764. Sure hope this helps you out!

Hello Gary. The capacitor will likely be attached to the side of the compressor, but will not be in the cover box. Start devices are used to trigger the compressor and turn it on and do not replace the need for the capacitor. You will need both parts in working order for your unit to run. I hope this information helps!
