Liquid-filled balance ring mounts on top of the spin basket. Replace if cracked, leaking, or detached to restore smooth spinning and reduce vibration.
I found that the balance ring had popped loose from the top of the inner metal tub and had been scored so that the fluid was leaking out. So, I removed the metal shell of the washer, then the top plastic cover over the outer tub. I pulled out the old part and put on the new one. I had to give it a pretty good push downward to engage the clips and get it fully seated. I ran my hand along the inside of the metal tub to feel that the new balance ring was fully seated. This basket assembly is a genuine OEM replacement part sourced directly from the manufacturer for use in front-load washing machines. This assembly is part of the washer's drive system. It is on top of the clutch and transmission system. It contains the spin tube shaft and brake system for the spin basket. If the washing machine is making loud noises during the spin cycle or won't spin at all, the basket assembly should be replaced. A screwdriver, socket wrench set and ratchet, hammer, and spanner wrench are needed to make this repair. Disconnect the water and power to the washing machine. Wear work gloves when making these repairs. Make sure the machine is pulled away from the wall, and there is plenty of room to work while disassembling the machine. Remove the top console and then the washing machine cabinet. Take the tub ring and agitator off the machine. Remove the spin basket and drive block and release the drive block. Remove and replace the basket drive. Reverse the order and reassemble the washing machine. Reconnect the power and water. This basket assembly is sold individually. It is designed for washing machines manufactured by General Electric.

Tore entire machine down to get to wash drum. Found it had a broken "spider" which is common with most front load machines. The drum is stainless steel but the spider is cast aluminum and it does not do well when exposed to laundry soap. It was pretty much disintegrated as a matter of fact. Anyway my machine is twelve years old and after some smooth talking, I was able to convince Whirlpool to send me a new wash drum at no cost. My warranty was one of the older ones and the drum had a... Read more
