Whirlpool Compressor Start Relay
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: W10613606

The Compressor Start Relay is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This component helps to kickstart the compressor, facilitating the refrigeration cycle that cools the interior of the fridge.

Such issues can stem from electrical failures within the relay, physical damage, or wear and tear from regular use. When the relay does not function correctly, it can lead to inconsistent cooling and, in severe cases, cause the compressor to overheat and fail prematurely.

Symptoms of a failing Compressor Start Relay include:

  • The refrigerator not cooling properly or not cooling at all
  • A noticeable clicking sound emanating from the back of the refrigerator, indicating the relay is trying to start the compressor but failing
  • The refrigerator starts and stops frequently, unable to maintain a constant temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

This part fixes the following symptoms
  • Clicking sound
  • Won't start
  • Freezer section too warm
  • Fridge too warm

Took access panel off the back of the refrigerator with 1/4 inch nut driver and found that the compressor was not running properly (humming and hot but not compressing). The compressor cooling fan was working as well as the fan in the freezer compartment. I fixed the same problem with another refrigerator by replacing the relay and start capacitor on the compressor. I pulled these two items from the compressor connector (gently pry the brown part from the comp terminals first and then the... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You No cooling and no hum from compressor when plugged in   Collin H. • Quincy , WA • October 23, 2014

I suspected the start-relay and tested it due to the lint plugged condenser coils. The start-relay rattled when shook, a telling sign it is no good due to over heating. I tested the compressor terminals and compared them the results with the Tech Data Sheet found with the unit, to find my compressor was still good. I checked the start capacitor with a capacitor tester, comparing the results with the rating printed on the side of the capacitor and found it to be good. I cleaned the condenser... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Compressor not running.   Eric A. • Canton , MA • December 16, 2017

My freezer and fridge were blowing warm and all my food in there was garbage... Lights and fans all working. Looked up some YouTube videos on what it could be. Bad compressor least likely culprit even though it wasn't running. It wasn't doing that "click whirr" thing if it were trying to start. It just flat out wasn't running. So, check the overload and relay that attach right on the side of the compressor. I did, and I shook them. They jingled like loose change=BAD. Ordered new ones and... Read more
